Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners will bring renewable energy including offshore wind to Vietnam through a new partnership with the country’s national oil and gas company.

CIP signed a memorandum of understanding with PetroVietnam on Thursday that will see the two parties collaborate on boosting Vietnam’s energy transition.

The collaboration covers technology, supply chain, logistics, infrastructure, skills and other areas, CIP said.

The companies will explore opportunities to collaborate on developing specific offshore wind projects in Vietnam.

Robert Helms, partner at CIP, commented: “We look very much forward to the collaboration with PetroVietnam and consider the MoU another important milestone for our presence in Vietnam.”

“CIP is a pioneer in offshore wind, and we look forward to sharing our knowledge, know-how and technological innovations to deliver Vietnam’s first offshore wind projects in a close collaboration of the parties and drive forward the green transition in the country.”

Vietnam’s energy mix is still dominated by fossil fuels, with wind and solar making up a tiny fraction of the total, according to the International Energy Agency.

Vietnam nevertheless has one of the most vibrant renewable energy sectors in Southeast Asia, according to law firm CMS, although foreign investors have been discouraged by Vietnam’s low feed-in-tariffs, with many believing that it is not harnessing its full potential.

The World Bank recently identified Vietnam as one of 11 developing countries it is tipping for success in offshore wind, with the potential for almost 25GW of offshore wind supplying 12% of its power needs by 2035. Vietnam has set a target for 6GW of offshore wind by 2030.

The country pledged at COP26 that it would aim for a net-zero emissions target by 2050.
