TotalEnergies links with AI firm to 'boost renewables rollout'
French supermajor will establish a joint AI lab to enhance industrial performance, cut CO₂ emissions, and improve customer experience.
TotalEnergies and French firm Mistral AI have announced a new partnership to develop artificial intelligence solutions aimed at supporting the supermajor's multi-energy strategy, including for renewables.
At the heart of the collaboration is the creation of a joint innovation lab, staffed by experts from both companies.
The lab will combine Mistral AI’s generative AI tools with TotalEnergies’ energy-sector expertise to pilot digital solutions in research and development, industrial operations, and customer services, TotalEnergies said in a statement Thursday.
Initial projects include the development of an AI assistant for TotalEnergies’ 1000 researchers to help speed up innovation in new energy sources, decision-support tools to help enhance industrial asset performance and reduce emissions, and digital services to help customers save energy.
"The lab will also test digital solutions for other use cases, especially renewable energy production," said TotalEnergies.
“AI has huge potential to transform energy systems, and this partnership was motivated by our pioneering spirit and ongoing search for innovation,” said TotalEnergies chief executive Patrick Pouyanne.
“This partnership illustrates the positive impact generative AI can have on a sector as strategic as that of TotalEnergies. By dedicating our AI solutions and experts to the R&D effort, the operational teams and, ultimately, the customers, we are contributing to improved operations and the digital transition of this global energy giant,” said Mistral AI chief executive Arthur Mensch.
TotalEnergies added that the partnership builds on its growing digital footprint, including its Digital Factory, which has already delivered more than 60 AI-powered tools ranging from machine learning applications to generative AI for operational use.
