The former renewable energy chief at oil giant Shell has been named CEO for MET group, whose European power assets include a growing wind base.

Huibert Vigeveno will take the top job at Switzerland-based MET Group from 1 January. He left Shell in April after a two-year stint leading its Downstream, Renewables and Energy Solutions operation.

MET Group’s Green Assets Division, its renewable energy unit, includes wind, solar and battery storage. It has turbines in countries including Bulgaria, Serbia and its home Swiss market.

The group has previously stated plans to have 2GW of renewables operating by the end of 2026 and said it wants to expand into markets including Germany.

Three-decades Shell veteran Vigeveno’s final few years there saw him oversee the supermajor’s renewable energy operations, which after an expansionary phase under previous CEO Ben van Beurden were sharply curtailed from 2023 by successor Wael Sawan.

MET Group said Vigeveno’s experience in major energy operations would help it achieve its own growth plans.

The Swiss company, whose interests also span gas and power trading, said current CEO, controlling shareholder Benjamin Lakatos, will stay as executive chairman.
