Nordex launches wind turbine model to cope with Canadian cold

Canada' wind power market has been attracting more interest from investors and Nordex wants to build on Scandanavian experience.

German manufacturer Nordex has launched an up to 7MW wind turbine platform designed to work in Canada, where challenging low-temperature environments are common.

Nordex based its N175/6.X platform on the Delta4000 modular wind turbine series, for which the Nordex Group has sold more than 40GW to date.

The Hamburg-based OEM has a track record of supplying onshore wind turbines to markets demanding tolerance of very low temperatures, such as Sweden and Finland.

The N175/6.X turbine is offered in a cold climate version with an advanced anti-icing system that promises “dependable performance in temperatures as low as minus 30°C”.

The platform features a 175-meter rotor and a rated output of up to 7MW and is designed to maximise energy production in the low to medium wind conditions encountered on many Canadian wind sites, the company stated.

Nordex pioneered anti-icing systems for rotor blades on its turbines 15 years ago, and has built up a strong performance in cold-climate markets since then.

“By preventing the build-up of ice on rotor blade surfaces, the anti-icing system significantly reduces ice-related downtime, ensuring consistent performance even in the harshest conditions,” Nordex stated.

According to Manav Sharma, Nordex North America chief executive, the introduction of the N175/6.X "will reduce the levelised cost of energy users in Canada and allow higher hub heights.”

Nordex North America has commissioned more than 9.3GW to date and currently has more than 1.16GW under construction for those markets.
