Google sealed its largest ever deal for offshore wind power with 478MW from North Sea projects underway by Shell and utility Eneco.

The web giant will take the power from the Hollandse Kust North V and West VI projects underway off the Netherlands by Crosswinds, the joint venture between the oil giant and Mitsubishi-controlled Eneco.

The agreement forms part of 700MW of green power deals announced by Google today (Thursday) that also include smaller corporate power purchase agreements in Belgium, Italy and Poland.

Google said the Dutch deal will enable it to cover more than 90% of the power at its Netherlands data centres with green power this year.

It is the second big offshore wind CPPA involving a global tech giant this week. Amazon earlier said it will take the lion’s share of output from the 882MW Moray West project off Scotland, where Google is also taking 100MW-worth.

Crosswinds secured the rights to build the Netherlands projects, each totalling 760MW and called Crosswind and Ecowind, in subsidy-free auctions run by the nation’s government.

Google said the deals it struck were instrumental to “support the development of these subsidy-free offshore wind farms, which are expected to contribute to about six percent of the country's annual electricity consumption”.
