Masdar 'strengthens partnership with Iberdrola' as Baltic Sea wind farm built

476MW Baltic Eagle array is also Middle Eastern utility's first in Germany, and part of Spanish green power giant's gigascale Baltic Hub

Masdar and Iberdrola have completed construction of the 476MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm, which UAE industry minister and Masdar chairman Sultan Al Jaber said “strengthens” the Middle Eastern utility’s €15bn ($16.33bn) “partnership with Iberdrola”.

The array in the German Baltic Sea is not only Masdar’s first joint project with Iberdrola, but also its first in the rapidly growing German market – and the second part of Iberdrola’s gigascale ‘Baltic Hub’.

“The installation of the fiftieth and final turbine of the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm … strengthens Masdar's partnership with Iberdrola, driving significant expansion in our offshore wind portfolio and advancing the global energy transition,” Al Jaber said, who is also COP28 president.

“Our collaboration, underscored by the €15 billion agreement signed at COP28 in the UAE, reaffirms our joint commitment to helping to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030."

Masdar as part of its alliance with Iberdrola in December of last year had also announced it was in final negotiations to buy close to half of the 1.4GW East Anglia 3 offshore wind project that is under construction in the UK, but the two companies since haven’t said whether the deal materialised.
Baltic Eagle is the second of Iberdrola's three major wind farm projects in Germany, along with the already operating 350MW Wikinger array, and the planned 315MW Windanker project in its vicinity, which collectively will form Iberdrola's 1.14GW Baltic Hub.

Including Baltic Eagle, Iberdrola “is on track to have nearly 5GW of offshore capacity globally by the end of 2026,” the company’s executive chairman Ignacio Galán said.

“Once fully operational, Baltic Eagle, the second offshore wind farm in our Baltic Hub, will make a considerable contribution to Germany’s energy transition, providing homegrown clean energy to almost half a million homes, whilst reducing emissions.

“This landmark milestone has been reached thanks to the strong partnership forged with Masdar, who share our vision of harnessing offshore wind energy to accelerate green energy security in Europe.”
