Monster monopiles on way to offshore wind farm after Orsted rings the changes

Order for 77 monopiles for 1.5GW Baltica 2 project comes as Danish utility and Polish peer PGE push through reconfigurations at project that had already won CfD support

The Navantia Seanergies-Windar consortium has won a contract to supply Orsted and PGE with 77 super-sized monopiles for their 1.5GW Baltica 2 offshore wind project in the Polish Baltic Sea.

The monopiles will have a maximum length of 110 metres, a weight of over 2,000 tonnes and a diameter of more than 11 metres. Four of them are for the substation of the wind farm, which is slated to start output in 2027.

The massive order came after Orsted and PGE succeeded in convincing the Polish government to allow for retroactive changes to their contract for difference (CfD) for the project to take into account a fundamentally altered energy market in Europe and a depreciation of the Zloty.

Orsted during its capital markets day last month had revealed that to secure value creation it is trying to push through reconfigurations of offshore wind projects in the US and Poland, and even willing to walk away from previously awarded projects if economics change but circumstances or support don’t.

The Danish offshore wind champion and its Polish partner currently are also trying to reconfigure the Baltica 3 project in Poland and the Ocean Wind 2 plan in the US state of New Jersey.

PGE Group and Orsted last month had also signed an agreement with consortium of Semco Maritime and PTSC Mechanical & Construction for four offshore substations.

"The project is gaining momentum and has clearly entered the phase of finalising further important contracts necessary for the development of the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm," PGE president Wojciech Dąbrowski said.

"Substations will be delivered for the Baltica 2 stage of about 1.5GW capacity which is planned to be commissioned by 2027.

"Our goal is to build new, green generation capacities in the Baltic Sea with a planned total of 2.5 GW by 2030 which is of great importance for strengthening Poland’s energy security."

Navantia Seanergies is currently also producing transition pieces for two Orsted wind farms in the US, Revolution and Ocean Wind.
