Siemens Gamesa celebrates first 4.X order since turbine relaunch

Siemens Gamesa is celebrating a landmark comeback order for its 4.X platform that was relaunched last year after serial defects, with Iberdrola giving the turbine model the nod for a wind farm in Spain.

Siemens Gamesa will supply eight of the SG 5.0-145 (2.0) turbines, each with a 5MW power rating, for the Labraza wind farm in Spain’s Basque Country.

Iberdrola subsidiary Aixeindar, which counts the Basque government as a minority shareholder, is developing the wind farm. The €59m ($62m) project is reported to be the first new wind farm in the Basque Country for two decades.

The order is the first for Siemens Gamesa’s 4.X turbine platform since it was relaunched by the manufacturer in September last year.
New business activities for the 4.X and 5.X platforms were halted after serial defects emerged in mid-2023, plunging the OEM into crisis.
The company raced to rectify the issues, which centred on the rotor blades and main bearings. Parent company Siemens Energy had estimated the cost of fixing the problems and producing the ‘2.0’ turbines would come to around €1.6bn.

The 4.X relaunch appeared to have been met with a deafening silence from wind power developers, with Siemens Energy CEO Christian Bruch admitting last month that no new orders had been placed for the 2.0 edition.

Bruch emphasised that Siemens Gamesa only expected “modest sales” of revamped 4.X but added that new orders were taking “longer than expected.”

In that context, the show of faith from Spanish renewables giant Iberdrola will be highly welcome for Siemens Gamesa.

Kerman Gabiola, managing director of Siemens Energy and Siemens Gamesa in Spain, said in an announcement today that the Labraza wind farm is a “very important project” for the Basque Country and that the turbine-maker is “proud to be able to carry it out together” with Iberdrola and the Basque Government.

Siemens Gamesa remains committed to returning to sales of its 5.X platform later this year, a spokesperson confirmed to Recharge.
Its parent Siemens Energy reported one of its “strongest quarters ever” last month, while losses at its turbine-making subsidiary continued but were narrowed.
