Skyborn Renewables strikes agreement to develop Finland's 2GW Pooki offshore wind farm
Skyborn moves for Bothnian Bay wind project following takeover by US private equity giant
Offshore wind developer Skyborn Renewables has entered into a reservation agreement with Finnish state-owned seabed manager Metsahallitus, granting five years of exclusive rights to develop the 2GW Pooki offshore wind project in the Bay of Bothnia.
Development works are scheduled to start as early as next month, according to Skyborn
“It is a significant milestone for Skyborn and reinforces our confidence in the potential of offshore wind in Finland,” Skyborn CEO Thomas Karst said.
“Working alongside Metsahallitus, we are excited with this opportunity to participate in Finland's transition towards a renewable future.”
The project is located in 20-metre-deep waters at some 25 kilometres from the coast in the vicinity of the former 480MW Suurhiekka wind park. Rights to this area were held by Wpd Offshore but the German renewables developer was bought last year by Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), and subsequently renamed as Skyborn Renewables.
The current plan for Pooki envisions the installation of around 100 wind turbines with a combined capacity of over 2GW.
”Finland is committed to expanding the capacity of emission-free energy through the rapid deployment of offshore wind,” said Tuomas Hallenberg, property development director of Metsähallitus.
“We welcome Skyborn Renewables to contribute to this development and strengthen fossil-free energy production in the country.”
