TotalEnergies and Goldwind to build 'world’s southernmost wind farm'

Wind farm set in 'Land of Fire' will feature 4.2MW turbines designed to withstand extreme weather, says Goldwind

France’s TotalEnergies and Chinese turbine-making giant Goldwind are teaming up to build the world’s southernmost wind farm in Argentina.

Goldwind announced yesterday that it is joining forces with TotalEnergies for a “groundbreaking project” near South America’s southern tip.

The wind farm will be set in Tierra del Fuego – ‘The Land of Fire’ – an archipelago straddling Argentina and Chile.

This will make it the southernmost wind farm in the world, claimed Goldwind, except for small-scale Antarctic installations.

Goldwind said Tierra del Fuego is known for its exceptional wind resources and challenging climate.

Goldwind will supply the project with its GW136-4.2MW turbines “designed to withstand severe weather,” it said. These will arrive via the port of Punta Arenas in Chile in the coming months.

Goldwind did not specify the number of turbines it will supply or the overall size of the wind farm. It is also unclear what the power generated will be used for. TotalEnergies last year fired up production from the Fenix gas field, located 60km off the coast of Tierra del Fuego.

The renewables project will also involve a battery storage component to save green power generated for when it’s needed.

Goldwind recently opened its first international factory in neighbouring Brazil, however it is unclear if this would produce the turbines for this project. Goldwind’s South America chief, Xuan Liang, previously told Recharge the factory will produce turbines with power ratings between 5.3-7.5MW.

Goldwind has a track record in Argentina, having previously supplied a 102MW onshore wind power project that came online in 2021 in the country. The turbine maker has also supplied projects in Chile and Brazil.

Goldwind is currently the world’s largest turbine supplier by volume, although the vast majority of its machines are supplied for domestic projects in China.
