Tributes paid after death of wind power champion Arthouros Zervos
Co-founder of global body was well-known advocate for wind and renewables who also ran Greek utility during financial crisis
Arthouros Zervos, a founder of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and a leading figure in the wider renewable energy industry, has died after a short illness.
Zervos was among the founders of GWEC in 2005 and served as president of the European Wind Energy Council, now WindEurope, between 2001 and 2013.
Zervos’ long and varied career also included a spell as chairman and CEO of Greek power utility Public Power Corporation amid the challenges at the height of the nation’s financial crisis and his role as president of renewables body REN21.
In 2013 he received the ‘Poul La Cour’ prize for outstanding achievement in wind energy.
Bruce Douglas, CEO of the Global Renewables Alliance, who worked with Zervos to establish GWEC and with him at EWEA said: "I am devastated that Arthouros is no longer with us. He was the reason I decided to spend my life working with wind energy and renewables, and I have relied on him as a mentor and friend for almost 25 years.
“His determination and warmth will be with us forever; however his loss will make us all even more determined to carry out the energy transition and create a better world for generations to come.”
GWEC’s current CEO Ben Backwell said: “Arthouros showed indefatigable energy, optimism and determination to create a better world, right to the end.”
